Adrian Shaw is a chef in the small town of Hillsburg and makes his living by being a personal chef for catering events. All he wishes for is the recognition he believes he deserves, especially proving people wrong about chefs only surviving and making it in big cities. He believes the opportunity to finally make his dream come true happens when he’s invited to a prestigious invite-only event that honors top chefs. It’s an annual event, and he knows of chefs who have gone to the event only to end up hired as head chefs in popular restaurants or being able to take their catering business outside the town. The only problem is that it’s mandatory to bring a plus one.
Melissa Hartley has been the nanny to Sophie Shaw, Adrian’s nine-year-old daughter, for the last three years. When Sophie’s mother passed away in a boating accident, Melissa was right there to step in to help the best that she could. They eventually found their groove with Melissa being trusted with Sophie’s care, especially if Adrian had to travel to neighboring cities and towns for catering events. She wonders if she’s missing anything in her life, mainly since her life consists of work and cleaning her apartment, making her content with how everything is. Since Melissa is the only female friend he has, he asks if she can be his plus one for the event and also act as if they are dating. It’s an unusual request from him, but since they are friends, she doesn’t mind and agrees to it.
What they never expected was sparks flying between them during the event and afterward, leading them down a path of romance and giving Adrian a possible second chance at love.
